He became Librarian of the Commercial Library in 1954 and was Assistant City Librarian (Reference Services) on his retirement. His greatest triumph was the planning and supervision of the move from the old to the new Central Library in 1973. He was keenly interested in local history and is also remembered as the historian of the parish of Harborne.
